Description

Byline: Adnan Pakistan's energy scarcity is seriously threatening its development. Power, backbone of development in any country, comes from both conventional and non-conventional sources. Pakistan had about 30% standby electricity in 2003-04, but has been facing severe power crisis for the last four years. The present crisis is considered to be the worst of four such crises that Pakistan has faced since 1974. Continuing power shortage in the country hurts national economy besides creating social as well as law and order problems in the country. Due to growing demand, system losses, seasonal cuts in hydropower and circular debt, the demand-supply gap of electricity results in unscheduled load shedding and routine 'load management'. Inadequate generation capacity is just one of the factors affecting power supply. The average supply-demand gap is between 3,500-4,000 MW. In June 2007, power cuts in Pakistan lasted no more than 3-4 hours a day.
